sharpened skates? (ice skating)

sharpened skates? a bold question with a nuanced answer? why?

1st homework: questions a & b, :)
a. are your newly sharpened skates useful enough, if you are skating on a poor quality and/or soft ice?
b. are your less sharpened skates useful enough, if you are skating on a mirror smooth and/or hard ice?

our answer:
keep your skates sharpened according to the ice surface. - easily said than done?

all skaters are interested, to reduce drag on the ice and make the most of their momentum (even beginners, in their instinctive reactions...) but, regarding their skates, do they really pay enough attention to how:
- suitable is the pair, for themselves?
- sharp should they be, given the ice surface? (indoor/outdoor ice rinks, crowd skating...)
- stiff and/or tight, they have to be? (once put on...)
